How many of you have adopted a homeless animal? You feel great and excited to start your new journey with this animal— you saved a life!! How exciting!!
But wait! Oh No!!! Your new dog just: “peed” on your couch, your new cat just jumped on the counter while you are cooking dinner, your kitten/puppy won’t stop crying and is driving you insane!!!
Oh no maybe this seems to be a very bad idea. Maybe you should just take your new friend back to where you got it from or ban it outside in the yard.
No please don’t give up so quickly.
Let’s see what we can do to help make this easier.
First off there are some great websites, trainers that can work with you and your new friend, rescues and shelters (like us) that want your pet to stay in its new home forever, and yes even “ animal communicators” (wait don’t laugh—- what’s that saying— “don’t mock it ‘til you’ve tried it” or something like that)!!! Anyhow here are some of my favorites that I have learned a lot from!!
Please remember you can do research and incorporate different pieces you like from all different trainers to suit yours and your dog’s needs. Do not take everything you read and learn as gospel! See if and what works and use it– nobody is perfect and as long as you are not hurting or injuring your new friend and he/she seems happy you are doing well. Good luck!!! |

Trainers There are many great local trainers, websites, and books with lots of information. All it takes is your time to make your pet the best he/she can be!!!!
Custom K9 Performance I have seen these dogs work and they are amazing! The dogs are happy and love to work. She makes training fun for the dogs and it shows.
Ian Dunbar This website has all the training information you can use. There are video clips and pdfs that you can follow on almost every issues your pet may be having.
Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson I have read two of their books and loved them both!! I read “Good Owners, Great Dogs” and “Tails From The Barkside”. Both very good books with some real life examples.
Cesar Milan I love watching and implementing some of Cesar’s methods on our problem dogs. But please remember that most of the animals he works with have issues that he is breaking them from. At the beginning of every episode he does mention not to try what he is doing. The public does not see what is going on off camera and many can’t read the animals they are working with like a professional can. However, even though he mentions not to try his methods at home and to seek a professional trainer on every episode— twice, so far, I have gone out to do a home visit and I got someone that says they watch every episode of Cesar Milan and believe my dog that they want to adopt has to be shown that they (the adopters) are the pack leader and knocks my dog down for no reason!! I guess they miss the beginning of every show!! Their applications are declined and most are very lucky that my dogs know that I am the leader and know not to bite. So long story short– Cesar Milan is amazing but the public should leave problem dogs to professionals that know what they are doing and shouldn’t be trying to over power every dog they meet just because they think they should– they might actually get attacked, not by the dog, but by the owner!!! |
